#7 Who Is Jesus?

Who is Jesus?

This is a complicated question to answer. History tells us that Jesus was a man who lived 2000 years ago and started a religious movement that is still alive and well today. He was born into the world and later died by crucifixion. These established historical facts document the humanity of Jesus. He was 100% flesh and blood human.

But does this alone tell who Jesus really is? Are we, as humans, any more than just the sum of our parts? We’re all made of flesh and blood with the same organ systems, but that doesn’t tell us who we are. Our spirit is the unique and defining essence that makes each us who we are, and the spiritual essence of Jesus is God. This is described further in the book of John where Jesus is referred to as the Word.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

John 1:1-4

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 1:14

This seems confusing at first, but think about what it means to give your word. When we give our word we are giving a solemn promise. It is a heartfelt and truthful vow that is bound to our very core. The word comes from you, but it’s also a part of you because it contains your very beliefs and commitment. What if this commitment could be made tangible? In this way, Jesus is the personified Word of God.

Jesus was born as a baby into the world, making him 100% human. But, spiritually, he was also 100% God. We have a God who willing took human form in order to reach us! Only in human form could we hear him speak, witness his miracles, and learn the truth from his own lips. Only in human form could he offer himself as a sin sacrifice, offering atonement for the sins of humanity. Jesus is the bridge that reconnects us to our Father in heaven.

Then he asked them, “But who do you say I am?”
Peter replied, “You are the Messiah sent from God!”

Luke 9:20
