Light in the Darkness
indeed, if you call out for insight
Proverbs 2:3-6
and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
Knowledge is something we can gain on our own or from other people. Wisdom, however, is provided by God. This gift from God gives us the ability to be discerning rather than just accepting matters at face value. It provides deeper insight into the truth. We live in a world filled with darkness and the motives of others are often hidden in the shadows. When we ask God for wisdom we are asking him to shine his light on all areas of darkness so that we can see the truth.
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
1 John 1:5-7
But God’s light is not selective. It illuminates every darkness, even that within ourselves. To ask for wisdom is asking for the ability to see our own weak and sinful nature. This can be difficult to do when our natural inclination is to hide this darkness.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
1 John 1:8-10
So if we truly desire wisdom God will provide it, but we must prepare ourselves for what we will see. We must acknowledge our own sinful nature before we can truly start walking in his light. When we finally understand who we are, and that God loves us anyway, we are able to offer him the reverent awe that he is due.
